I'm having difficulty accessing a student's file in Speedgrader.

When I click on the student's file, to show up on speedgrader - a blue link shows up in the upper left hand corner which also tells me the size of the file. When I click on it, I get a message that instructs me to find an app in the Microsoft Store. When other students have submitted, the documents shows up immediately.

Can you tell me what is going on?  How do I instruct the submit.   I thought all they had to do was upload a file?

In most likelihood, the student used a software application to type his/her assignment that you don’t have on your computer.

Ask the student what program they used and what other software they have available to them. Perhaps you can provide guidelines to students on accepted file types. Just remember that it is not appropriate to require homework to be submitted in Word. It's an expensive product and students may not have a license for it.  An alternative to Microsoft Word is Open Office, which is free, and the files can be opened in Word.

You can restrict file types.  I posted about this in another thread, but basically you list the file types separated by commas with no spaces.  For example, for Word, jpg, png Open Office Text you would click the box that says restrict file types.  Enter the following:

doc,jpg,png,out

I’d put in the description what file types are accepted and as Vivie mentioned, make sure that at least one file type is produced by software that is free for all operating systems.
