I am working on tests in canvas quizzes and have not published any of them yet, but I keep getting this message while I’m tweaking the tests:

Students have either already taken or started taking this quiz, so be careful about editing it. If you change any quiz questions in a significant way, you may want to consider regrading students who took the old version of the quiz. Students have either already taken or started taking this quiz, so be careful about editing it. What should I check?

  • You can check the gradebook to see, in fact, any students have taken the test. Perhaps you had published it momentarily, and a student had gotten in and answered some questions?

  • It could be that you had test-driven the quiz as as student, and Canvas is including that in its validation errors.

Any other ideas, team?

That is exactly what I would have suggested.  Either way, as long you don't have actual student grades recorded it would not affect anything by editing the test again.

You can also reset the Canvas Student.

For me it happens when Test Student took the quiz, even my DEV shell. Resetting the Test Student no longer clears the message/error — it used to clear it.

Since I use QUESTION BANKS for all of my QUIZZES — even ones where I place the questions directly in the quiz — and because I do not import to a LIVE course until finalized: when this message/error occurs, I often go back and create a new quiz. Question Banks helps to make this process quite fast! ?
