CANVAS SUPERHERO ALERT!

Oh my gosh... Did Canvas rush the launch of NEW QUIZZES? Did they consider image-heavy courses? Am I just having a bad day? Did I miss the day where the SECRET DECODER RING was distributed?

?

Concerns:

1. MINOR: No cancel button... A user-friendly feature if you forget what you did because you walked away or something or made a huge mistake that's too complicated to undo. This is the least concerning concern.

2. MAJOR: Points at the setting level do not have to match points at question level. What does this mean? Well, let's say:

  • You indicate that a quiz is worth a total of 1 pt;
  • Make a question worth 5 pt;
  • What's shown in the summary is 1 pt;
  • What the student sees taking the quiz is 5 pts; and
  • What's reported to the Gradebook is 1 pt.

Also, why is it necessary to enter TOTAL quiz value? Why not add up all question values to arrive at total?

3. MAJOR: If you MIGRATE a quiz from CLASSIC to NEW and add questions? Point value for every question defaults to 1 pt and there is NO WAY to edit point value at question level. (I tested this: if you recreate the quiz in NEW, you can edit point value at question level.) Oh and, you cannot migrate QUESTION BANKS so you have to add the questions and even so, no way to edit point value.

4. MAJOR FOR IMAGE-HEAVY COURSES: Cannot add images from Canvas files only from computer files. Also, where do these images live? They are not in folders. Every time an image is used in a course it needs to be re-uploaded —or— you need to find where else you've used it and COPY + PASTE.

5. MAJOR FOR ACCESSIBILITY: Let's say you embed an image and add ALT TEXT and save. Then, you go back into the image? No more ALT TEXT! Where did it go?

... And that's where I gave up! While I understand that Canvas has delayed transition to NEW QUIZZES until June 2021, we are rebuilding (from ground up) one of our Art History courses and I was excited to make the switch. Ugh!!!!!

?

Anyone out there been using actively NEW QUIZZES?

Any workarounds or recommendations?

P.S. I keep going back to NEW QUIZZES and double-checking everything I am experiencing just in case I am in THE MATRIX or something.

WOW!

I couldn't believe what you reported could possibly be true, so I had to check it out in a dev shell! (Not that I doubted you - it was just too hard to fathom). You are correct.

These are serious weaknesses and problems.   Eek

Where is the scratching head emoji?

All I can say is two things:

  1. I am glad they are delaying the rollout until next summer; and
  2. I hope this delay means that they are working around the clock to mature the product.

You really ought to post this thread, as you list it here, in the Canvas community forums.

Except the first one... We removed the 'cancel' button in Etudes and out of 4,000 faculty, only two noticed. And, for the first time in years, we stopped having people crying about losing work. So that one is OK. You will get used to it. Auto-save all the time is good.

@vivie-sinou

I can absolutely manage without the CANCEL BUTTON. As for the rest? I am so relieved to hear you checked my concerns and had the same results. THANK YOU! Yesterday I spent no less than 3 hours of frustration truly believing I was doing something wrong... Canvas really needs to mark NEW QUIZZES as BETA or something.

?

Happy to post concerns to Canvas community forums by the weekend... BUT... only if it takes 30 seconds or less. This week my quota for poorly-designed Canvas platforms has been maxed out... Lol!!!!!

Also, I wonder if there is a (third-party) QUIZ/EXAM plug-in that might be better suited to art history quizzes and exams? Nearly every assessment in art history uses at least one image. Over the past few years, I have spent Considerable time optimizing the assessment-design and image-management process but the experience on Canvas is still less then optimal.

I had the exact same thought last night as I reviewed the New Quizzes tool. If that's what they end up releasing, we'll have to find you all a different assessment engine. This is not acceptable. They have another 10 months, so let's hope they improve things.

My experience with "New Quizzes" has been very good.

1.  I agree, the lack of a cancel button is pretty minor.  I like auto-save.

2.  I agree about the points total, it is a bit goofy, but hasn't been a big deal for me.  You can easily change the total points by going back to edit mode on either the Quizzes page or Assignments page.  On the assignments page you get a simpler editing box.  As always it's the 3 dots dropdown menu.  Also, I think allowing us to have different totals is pretty cool and opens up some creative opportunities.  I see this as a plus for many.

3.  I'm not sure if I follow this one, but I also haven't found a way to change the points value for imported questions in the "New Quiz" format.  I guess you would need to figure that out before you exported it, but you should be allowed to change these.

Maybe I'm not understanding about adding new questions into a migrated quiz and not being able to edit the points. I was able to change it to whatever I wanted for new questions. I'm probably missing something though.

4.  I think the file management in New Quizzes is not very good compared to the Classic Quiz format.  I'm still doing a bit of researching on this.  I use a lot of images as well, but once they inserted I don't usually change anything and they transfer to new courses just fine.  Maybe this part is a work in progress.

5.  I'm still trying to figure this one out.

Overall I have liked the New Quiz format, but I can see there are a lot of things they need to improve.

Oh and, you cannot migrate QUESTION BANKS so you have to add the questions and even so, no way to edit point value.

I was able to migrate a Classic Quiz and edit the points values.  I'm taking off in a bit, but I can do a quick video later this afternoon.  Basically you have to export the quiz and import a question bank under the "Manage Item Banks."

You can edit points values on migrated questions.  Hint:  make sure you scroll down to see the edit box.  I missed it the first time.

points value

You are 100% Deanna, the Alt Edit option mysteriously vanishes.  I'm not sure why you would want to edit it though and you could just embed the image again.  Still, you should be able to edit it.

I confirmed, that you can't reuse images.  Only the Canvas Gods know where those files are!!

The one thing for me that is really a bummer is no HTML editor.  Really?  They have really taken away the power to do a lot without it.  I really like the New Quiz format for a lot of reasons, but it is way less flexible in a lot of ways.

Lastly, I wish you could easily link to other places in Canvas like the old format. Sure you can paste the URL, but before they had a links tab.

Cheers,

Aaron

Here is a helpful set of instructions on migrating a quiz and updating it to a New Quiz.  I didn't read the tutorial carefully, but it looks like basically how I was able to do it.

Yep!  I confirmed this with someone in Canvas tech support.  The person agreed that it's pretty goofy.  I guess you have to reinsert the image again which is just plain dumb. Sad

Hi @aaron-garner

What's even worse? Canvas has taken away the option to view SOURCE CODE. At least with the code, it is possible to verify and edit the ALT TEXT attached to the image.

We really need to get @john-cavano in on this conversation about NEW QUIZZES.

Thank you for including me, but it looks like you and @aaron-garner have mentioned more than I ever could. The glitches with Alt Text, and not having access to the Source Code is very worrisome. I hope this is fixed before it is mandatory to use the new quizzes.

This is my only addition: Navigating the new quizzes by keyboard is a bit of a chore because it involves switching between using Down Arrow or using Tab and it is not clear when to use which key. Some auditory instructions for screen reader users would be helpful. The old quizzes are a little more straight forward to navigate.

Thank you both for all of your research. And thank you @vivie-sinou for looking into this.

Yep, that's what I mentioned in my previous post.  I like to tweak the HTML code for all sorts of things so it's a bummer.  And I wish we could insert scripts, but that's another topic.

Yes, hopefully they will fix it, but there shouldn't be a problem unless you have to go back and edit an image.  You just have to remember to re-upload an image again to get the Alt Text back.  At least that's my understanding.
