Is there a way to use the Canvas embedded turnitin program to assess similarity of exam answers in an exam that has already been taken? I wrote the exam in the old quiz format (which does not give me the option to use turnitin).   If not, do we have account access to the turnitin in website (without access through canvas)?

I have a situation where I need to calculate the similarity between answers on an exam.  I have not used turnitin on my exams in the past.

Thank you for your help!

Sherrie,

We do have access to Turnitin.com outside of Canvas.  I've been using it for years.  I don't remember how I got the account, but I think Jen Azzaro set it up for me.

When you have access to the site, you can submit documents yourself and use the similarity function to check for plagiarism.  I do this all the time.  If you decide to create an account, let us know if you need any help.  I'm pretty familiar with how it all works.

Sherrie,

If you use Turnitin within Canvas, an account at Turnitin.com should have been automatically generated for you.  If you have trouble logging in there, you can try resetting your password for Turnitin's website.  Once you're in, you can also contact their support and they should be able to walk you through comparing two papers.

@jenn-azzaro Thank you!

My next question would be, would I need to make a quiz (using the turnitin function) then have students take that quiz in order for a new account to be automatically generated for me?  If so, is there a way to bypass my students having to take a quiz so I can get an account?

@sherrieg Sherrie, I just manually set up an account for you.  You should have received an email at your Delta College email account.  If not, check your junk folder - or just go to Turnitin.com and reset your password.  Your username should be your full email address.
