Is there any major difference between Vimeo and Youtube? Are there any advantages of using Vimeo over Youtube? Is Vimeo available for us?

I think while using Vimeo there will be no ads that will bother our students. Right?

There are quite a few differences.  I use both and like Vimeo better.  I find it faster to upload and all around easier, but that’s obviously personal.  The allowable video quality is better than YouTube if that is important.  The sound is better for my needs.  You also don’t get bombarded with a ton of ads like YouTube.

Both are free to upload, but Vimeo does have a weekly limit on how many MBs you can upload although I think it’s pretty decent depending on the video quality.  Of course this is personal, but I like Vimeo better and enough so that I pay for the premium membership.  I can’t remember what the monthly cost is, but it’s not much.  For me it’s worth it.

I also find the password protection really straightforward and easy.

Overall they both work well so either way you can’t go wrong.  The no ads and better video/sound quality sold me.

Good luck,

Aaron

@aaron-garner - This is great info to have. Thank you for sharing.

How about close captioning? Is that supported in vimeo? Youtube makes that process fairly easy.

@vivie-sinou. To be honest, I don't know a lot about closed-captioning in Vimeo, but I am pretty sure the site doesn't do the translating for you.  I know you can upload a file though so you would have to have a program or service create it first.  This could be a problem now that I think about it.

I've used Vimeo a lot professionally for doing music scoring of videos, but not much for education so I'm not up on that function.  I'm glad you asked the question.

I'll do a bit of research on closed-captioning in Vimeo and get back on this.

This article from TechRadar YouTube versus Vimeo supports what Aaron said about Vimeo having better video quality and fewer ads for the viewer. This article also lists costs.

Both YouTube and Vimeo can be linked to 3Play Media, the captioning vendor we are working with. This enables your videos to appear on 3Play Media's website when you are ordering captions. Checking the videos you want to be captioned is much more intuitive than copying and pasting hyperlinks. And, the finished captions are added directly to your videos.

Only videos marked as "Public" or "Unlisted" can be captioned by 3Play Media. In a free YouTube account, you can also mark videos as "Private", 3Play Media cannot caption, but I'm not sure you can do this with the free Vimeo account.

And as Vivie mentioned, YouTube makes adding your own captions easier by providing auto-captions and allowing you to upload a transcript, which YouTube will break up into captioned chunks. Vimeo does not have do-it-yourself captioning tools but refers people to use Amara.org, where you can caption your own videos.

@john-cavano. Thanks for the really great information and the article link.  I need to do more homework on closed-captioning in Vimeo.  I'll check out 3Play Media.

As I said in my original reply, I really like Vimeo for uploading speed and the better video/sound quality.
