Major problem:

I just checked both Canvas iOS STUDENT App and Canvas iOS INSTRUCTOR App. No images visible:

From the STUDENT APP:

Screenshot of HOME page via Canvas iOS student app 2020 1006

From the INSTRUCTOR APP:

Images not visible in Canvas iOS apps 2020 1006

All of the above images CONFIRMED VISIBLE on laptop running Chrome for Apple OS —and— have ALT TEXT.

Did I miss something or is Canvas out of sync with the Apple iOS updates in the pass week or so? Also, this is a major problem for students who use an Apple mobile device to access Canvas.

@deanna-de-azevedo - Please report it to Instructure, if you haven't done so already. Thank you!

Will do!

Quick question: Is there no access to the HELP menu when using an APP instead of desktop/laptop?

Canvas Rep could not PORTAL IN and is checking with another team member to determine if the no visible images is a problem for students —or— a problem for TEST STUDENT.

Rep will follow up as soon as she knows something.

IDEA:

Can a faculty member who is a student in a PDC Canvas training course, perhaps check and see if this is a student issue —versus— a test student issue?

Update at 13:54

Canvas iOS INSTRUCTOR App

  • on iPhone: images now visible
  • on iPad: images now visible

Canvas iOS STUDENT App

  • images STILL NOT visible

Wonder if Canvas is working on something?

Images are showing up for me in the student app on my iPad.  Are you referring to images in an assignment, page etc?  I have music notation images in many assignments and they are all showing for me.  Perhaps they just fixed it.  I'm late to the party!!

Hi @aaron-garner

PAGES not showing images in CANVAS STUDENT APP — my first post has images. This is for both my iPad (latest and greatest) and an iPhone 8; both running most current iOS. Because of sequential navigation (my test student did not keep up on homework ?), I cannot verify images within quizzes. I also cannot see images in the CANVAS LITE classroom when using the STUDENT APP.

The INSTRUCTOR APP on both iOS devices appears to have been fixed.

Canvas has not responded.

Postscript:

  • I can NOT see images in ANNOUNCEMENT or PAGES.
  • I CAN see images in FILES.

@deanna-de-azevedo. Just so I understand.  You are not able to see an embedded image in a page or announcement using the Canvas App.  I hope I'm understanding this correctly.

I just checked the following page in my Canvas app (student and teacher) and it shows for me.  It is just an embedded image.

Edit:  I just created an announcement with an embedded image and it also showed up in both apps.  Hmmm!  I wonder what's going on?

Did you use a JPG or a PNG format? At this point, I am wondering if Canvas is not supporting PNG? I mostly use PNG.

Other things I checked:

  • Student APP updated on 9/29.
  • I dumped the APP on both phone and iPad.
  • Full shut down and restart on both devices.
  • Reloaded the APP.
  • Images still not visible.

Also, @vivie-sinou: Canvas never followed up with me yesterday after being on the phone with them for 36 minutes. Ugh!

@deanna-de-azevedo. I typically use PNG files.  I can test JPG files a bit later.

I hope they fix it soon.  I'm curious why I haven't had a problem - yet!!  How are you embedding the images?  I typically use the images tab on the right.  I rarely use the embed images in the toolbar.

It looks like for both 6.9.2 and 6.9.3, folks are still experiencing the problem. I always save images to specific file folders and embed images using Rich Content Editor image icon. It’s an art history course with a lot of images. So, trying to use the image tab on the right with the way images are managed? I would never get anything done!

That said, it would seem that you have found an area where images are still working in the Student APP!

I guess it's a difference in workflow.  I use tons of images for my music classes.  I manage files and folders on my computer so I always know where things are.  I find the images tab very efficient.  In the meantime, perhaps you could try it and see if that fixes the problem.

Just tried with the IMAGE TAB. Does not work. What version of Student APP are you running?

That is very odd.  I just did a test page and my images showed up in the student app on my iPad.  I used both methods: images tab and embed image in the RTE.

Ah hah!  I just discovered I don't have the latest version of either the student or teacher Canvas app.  Apparently the new and improved version isn't so great!  I'd guess it's the app.

Okay, I will admit that I didn't read this article completely because I'm headed out for a bit, but you might be able to go back a version.  If it works and is simple, maybe your students could do this.  I'm going to send an email out to students to hold off on updating if they haven't done so already.

Install Old Version of App

@vivie-sinou and Colleagues —

I was so excited the past couple of weeks: Canvas Student App (version 6.9.4) resolved the image-viewing issue. And then? Apple pushed out an update last week, and the resolution once again became unresolved. UGH!

The good news? The image issue appears to have been fixed in the most recent version of Safari (both OS and iOS). Today I am pushing outa follow-up ANNOUNCEMENT to students (below). Also, I am a big believer that technical issues of this nature CAN drive innovation. As a result, I developed a CHECK YOUR TECH QUIZ that students take a critical points in the semester, including:

  • Week 1
  • 1-2 weeks prior to an exam
  • Before beginning an exam

This way, hopefully, no one is caught by surprise and everyone has time to pivot and come up with a backup... just in case!

Here's that announcement I mentioned:

Hello Students —

The Canvas Student app has been touch and go lately relative to Apple operating system updates. Here's a snapshot:

  • Canvas Student APP ((Version 6.9.4 — 19 October) resolved the image-viewing issue. Prior to Midterm Examination (XM), I checked daily and the images were visible in the Student App.
  • Apple iOS update to 14.1 (pushed out this past week for many users): this update has caused the image-viewing issue to re-emerge. Images have ceased to be visible.

I will continue to monitor the Canvas APP for updates. In the meantime:

If an iPhone is your only option for Art 1A?

For now, access the course through a BROWSER APP on your phone NOT via the Canvas Student APP. I have confirmed this morning that images are visible in the following browsers:

  • Safari (iOS 14.1)
  • Chrome for iOS (version 86.0.4240.93)
