I have a student who was trying to see what his grade standing is as of now. There hasn’t been a lot of assignments yet (being only the first week) but he wants to constantly monitor what his grade is. He sent me a download of how his grades are showing up. Some of the assignments that are for the future are showing up as having 0 points instead of the dash - that normally shows up for a future assignment. This is causing his overall class grade to show as an F or 6%.
Can you help me figure out why some assignments are automatically showing in my students grades as 0 because they haven’t been done yet, while the rest of there assignments aren’t.

Hi there —
Any chance of a screenshot? Follow-up questions:
1) How many points is the assignment worth?
2) Is the assignment set to AUTO or MANUAL?
3) Even though this is a “future assignment” what date is set in DUE? And... What date is set in UNTIL?
With a little more information and a visual, I am sure we can find a solution!

@deanna-de-azevedo. Here is the screen shot the student sent me of his grades showing Zeros for some of the assignments. All of the assignments he’s been given Zeros for are future assignments. None of them are past the due date.

@deanna-de-azevedo. Sorry, also I have them set to automatically put grades in the grade book.
The dates due are many differ t date because it’s half a dozen assignments this has happened to. But I also give them access to the assignment the day before it’s due and for two days after where they can still turn it in but late.

Are the due dates already past for some reason? If you have Canvas automatically grade assignments those that were not attempted will be assigned a zero. I would start by verifying that the due dates are in fact a future date.

And also... something that I learned from @aaron-garner:
There is a GLOBAL SETTING that automatically applies a ZERO score if the due date is indeed “past.” Perhaps that setting is enabled?

Question. Did you copy the assignments from a previous course? If so, I wonder if Canvas assigned zeros before you updated the assignments with current dates? If you have them automatically set to assign zeros for late submissions that might explain it.
This could also happen if you duplicated assignments with a past date.
Just a thought.

In my DEV shell, I try to remove DUE and UNTIL dates at end of semester to prep for the next term. For a LIVE course, ADJUST ALL is fantastic for ONE-STOP, GLOBAL due date adjustments. Highly recommend using!

Adjust All is a page that allows you to change dates for all of your assignments, quizzes, discussions etc. It's a great time saver when you need to change a bunch of dates.
You will find the link in the left-hand navigation pane.

@aaron-garner I did copy some assignments from past courses. They due dates for all of them are now set for future dates. Do you know how I can reset so it will take the automatic grade of Zero out (with very detailed instructs, please)?

I'm not aware of a method to reset grades for an assignment/quiz all at once. You can use the up/down arrow on your keyboard to remove grades quickly in the grade book. I can do this very fast.
Here is how I do it:
- In the top of a grade column, click in the first field.
- With one finger on the delete key and the other on the down arrow you can delete an entire column very quickly.
If this doesn't make sense, I can do a short video on how to do this.

Yep, a huge time saver. More to come about Design Tools Plus, but there is another slick option that most don't know about yet. I'm going to do some tutorials on this soon so stay tuned.
