Canvas Groups Frustrating

Hi Folks,

Second time around using canvas groups. Still problems. Thanks Canvas.

I have two sections of Com St. 8 combined into one shell.

  1. Groups have been created and I am having students join on their own.
  2. I restricted students to joining a group to their enrolled section number.
    • This ensures students are grouped with their classmates.
  3. Canvas is allowing some students to join the section number that they are not enrolled in.
  4. Canvas will not allow some students to join a group with the section number they are enrolled in.
    • I have a student enrolled in a section number and is trying to join a group with her section number and the system will not allow it.
    • I tried to override the system and unlock the "restrict to same section" option, placed my student in the group, and tried to save, but the system said I cannot do that since mixed sections could not be in the same group.
    • Again, my student is enrolled in this section so she should be able to join this group with the same section number. I should be able to drag and drop her there and I cannot.
  5. Little lock icon on the right hand side (student view) says groups are unavailable when they actually are available and open for students to join.

Please advise.

Thank You,

Nicole Sandoval

Hi Again,

I solved my own problem by having to re-sort all students per section number on my own. Amazing technology.

If you have any ideas on how canvas can actually group students into the correct section number they are enrolled in, please do share, because from my end, this part of the system is broken.

Thanks,

Nicole Sandoval

Hi Nicole,

If I'm understanding what you're trying to do, it seems to work for me.   In the video I showed you a second method, but after rereading your post I see you probably already did that.

I would avoid letting them sign up on their own.  The key is to check the box:  "Require group members to be in the same section."

Thanks for your question.

Hi Aaron,

I appreciate your video. I want students to join a group on there own because I have to schedule them according to the time of day they can meet (ie morning, noon, evenings). Therefore, I cannot place students in groups manually.

My screen is not the same as yours as I ask students to join groups on there own.

Bottom line is, if I ask students to join groups on there own and I check the box off on "require groups to be in the same section", canvas should be able to determine what student is in any given section. I should not have to move students around to the correct sections manually. This is a canvas problem. It has been my experience so far that canvas does not spend a lot of time polishing the hiccups in groups.

I appreciate your help.

Nicole

Okay I see now what you are trying to do.  I'm wondering if you trusted them to sign up for the correct group/section if they would get that right?  You could test it to see.  I think if you posted clear instructions and stressed that they sign up for their registered class section you might have success.  Something like:

"Please sign up for your section number.  You will be in either 12345 or 23456.  Your section number is listed next to the course title."

For simple tasks like that I give a small number of points for incentive.

One last thought I just had.  In the past, I have had signup sheets for singing exams where I have the students sign their name under a time slot.  I created the sheet with an editable page.  It worked great.  This would allow you to manually put them where they requested.

Hi, Nicole:

Sorry you are still having issues with groups. 🙁 It's supposed to be a flexible and powerful functionality in Canvas. I just searched their community forums, and I don't see any reports on bugs or issues reported. This is puzzling.

I found the below guide from Tufts Univ. I am sure it's exactly what you are doing:

https://canvas.tufts.edu/courses/154/pages/how-do-i-create-self-sign-up-groups

Could it be that some students don't know their section #? So many students don't.

Could it be that (some) students were playing musical chairs and some groups were getting closed and others couldn't get in by the time they clicked on 'Join'? Students can always switch between groups as long as you allow self sign-up.  So you will want to be sure to turn that option off once everyone is settled in. Perhaps you can give them a deadline to sign up for groups and then disable the self sign up option?

--

p.s. You cannot test the group functionality while in Student View, so the lock you may have seen is not what students see. If a group is open, they'll see "Join".

I verified that Canvas will only allow students to join groups with students from their sections, if you've enabled that feature. There will be a lock in groups from other sections. So there is built-in security for that. You don't need to bother to include section #s on titles/names of groups. Students can join only eligible ones, anyway.

Here is a video that I found that may be useful.

@vivie-sinou. Great find.  I tested it and it worked for me.

Here is a page I created.  Notice the check box that allows anyone to edit the page.

Hi Aaron and Vivie,

I appreciate your help. Rest assured I checked the box "require students be in the same section" and I can tell you there were students who joined the wrong groups with the wrong section number.

  1. Part of the problem is I have two sections in one shell. Canvas only allows one section number to be located on that shell, therefore students assume this is the section they are enrolled in. This is only true for one class.
  2. Yes, I send detailed directions, I explain there are two sections in the class, I ask them to look at their name in canvas and it will show what section number they are enrolled in, check MyDelta, you name it, I say it.
  3. Vivie the video you posted is exactly what I did. I labeled my groups set "All Groups" and then I change each group accordingly.
    • I have to label all groups with sections numbers and a time of day to meet. Example: 32041, Mornings, 8 - 10 am, Group 1.
    • 32041, Afternoons, 12 - 2 pm, Group 2, etc.
    • I do this because all students must be able to meet in the time frame for all weekly group meetings and all synchronous Zoom group check ins and presentations with me.

Still students are able to join any group they want regardless of section number. Last semester and this semester I have had to manually move students around to groups with their correct section.

I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Take a peak in my shell, maybe you can see something I cant. See attached screen shot.

The option of allowing self sign ups for groups and the option of groups students within the same section do not work for me. It is frustrating.

Aaron, I appreciate your sign up sheet. I see where you are going. My point, canvas should be doing its job of organizing students in groups with the proper section number. The sign up sheet is another step for me to complete on my own and then have to manually organize students. I need the technology to work for me, otherwise, why bother with it.

I appreciate both of you. Thank you.

Nicole
