OER/UDL Course (re) Design Initiative

Funded through a grant from the CCCCO, the OER Course (Re)Design Project empowers faculty to transition existing courses—or create new ones—using Open Educational Resources (OER) and faculty-authored free materials. By doing so, we aim to reduce or eliminate the cost of course materials for students and ensure that our courses align with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to meet the diverse needs of all learners.

  • Timeline: June 1, 2025 – December 31, 2026 (or until grant funding is exhausted)

  • Participation: Up to 25 courses will be selected through an open call process, coordinated by the Distance Education (DE) Instructional Design Team and the Dean of DE and Regional Education.

  • Faculty Stipend: Participants will receive a $2,000 stipend per unit redesigned (e.g., $6,000 for a 3-unit course).

  • Stipend Payments: Disbursed in three stages:

    1. After attending orientation and submitting an approved OER/UDL course design plan.

    2. Upon completion of approximately 50% of project deliverables.

    3. After final review and approval of the completed OER course by the DE Instructional Design Team.

  • Faculty Support: Participants will receive hands-on support from the Office of Regional & Distance Education and Professional Development, including training in:

    • Open Educational Resources (OER)

    • Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

    • Accessibility best practices

    • Course design tools

  • Course Requirements: Each redesigned course must:

    • Use zero-cost materials (OER and/or faculty-created resources).

    • Integrate UDL principles to ensure accessible and inclusive learning.

    • Incorporate instructional design best practices.

    • Pass a full accessibility review.

  • Collaboration & Sharing: Faculty will create OER course shells in Canvas, designed for use in their own teaching and by other faculty at SJDC. All materials will be licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial (CC BY-NC) license.

By embracing OER and UDL, Delta College is taking a proactive step toward:

  • Reducing the financial burden on students by providing free, high-quality learning materials.

  • Promoting equitable access to education for all learners.

  • Supporting faculty innovation through professional development and financial stipends.

Together, we are building a more inclusive, affordable, and student-centered learning environment for our community.

San Joaquin Delta College gratefully acknowledges the generous funding support of the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO).
